Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli, born in Florence in 1469, served as a diplomat for the Florentine republic for several years, before creation move for conspiracy, tortured, and impris oned when the Medici family returned to power. After being exiled he continued to get hold of and write mostly about his obsession with political sympathies. He put together his views and opinions, based on his knowledge and experiences, in a hold up and presented it to Lorenzo de Medici, the upstart head of Florence. In this book were twenty-six chapters with Machiavellis examples and tips on how and how not to run a country.
For example: he believed that all the states exist in either republics or principalities and defines building complex principalities as a mixture of handed down and new leadership. This reminds me of a newly elected president, taking on problems unexpended behind by the previous leader. In his opinion, to be a ripe(p) leader, you had to have fought for your position, not born into it, or bought your steering into it, or even cheated. Machiavelli excessively believed that being a darling leader that has fought for a position, lays the groundwork for being able to realise followers along the way and forming loyal soldiers.
Over the years, as leadership changed hands, Machiavelli transformed his beliefs.
In his opinion, leaders had to be faultless to succeed, but his definition of virtuous had a different meaning. He thought a prince must be liberal without being ostentatious. His virtual prince could have the confidence of his subjects, but at the same time, use his influence to do whatever had to be done, good or bad, honesty or trickery, to rule his kingdom. He believed politics had its own moral codes and that to effectively rule, he must at times, be the bad guy. I think this also applies to the present. Although, obviously, some leaders are better at it than others, or they wouldnt get caught, letting the power get to ones head can sometimes be hard.
