Morals are ones standards of expression or beliefs concerning what is right and wrong. In his book, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald establishes the decay of clean-living values in the Roaring 20s, a time of exuberant invigoration and open opportunities for everybody, by displaying the carelessness, superficiality, and materialism of the people at the time.
Gatsby, the main character, is corrupted due to the means by which he earns his money, thus, losing his morals. To get wealthy, Gatsby be abide bys a bootlegger which is a crime because alcoholic beverage is illegal. Gatsbys superficiality is shown by having strangers go to his parties at his signboard bought with his bootlegging money. Although he is aware that people do not have positive things to say about him, he tranquillise welcomes them in, showing his superficiality because he does not have trustworthy friends; he uses the people for an outward appearance of his way of life to impress the love of his life, Daisy. He also becomes materialistic; for example, he uses his wealth to throw big parties, to own the huge mansion, and to be loved by Daisy.
